How to buy a scooter or motorbike in Bali

4 min read

How much should a scooter cost in Bali?

A used automatic scooter (Honda Scoopy, Vario, Yamaha NMAX) typically ranges from about 12,000,000 to 30,000,000 IDR depending on year and condition. Older 110cc scooters can be found cheaper, while a newer NMAX or PCX holds its value. Always compare several listings for the same model and year before deciding.

Check the paperwork: STNK and BPKB

Two documents matter. The STNK is the annual registration (it must be valid and the tax paid). The BPKB is the ownership book — never buy a bike without seeing the original BPKB. Make sure the engine and frame numbers match the documents.

If you plan to stay long term, transfer the registration to your name (balik nama). For short stays, a clear STNK and BPKB plus a simple signed receipt are usually enough.

What to check before you pay

Test the brakes, lights, horn and electric starter. Look for oil leaks, worn tyres and a smooth, quiet engine. Check the odometer against the overall condition. Meet during the day, in a public place.

Pay only after you have inspected the bike and seen the documents. Never send a deposit before viewing.
