Buying used camera gear in Bali: Sony, Canon, Fujifilm and what to check
4 min ·
What sells in Bali and why
Bali has a large community of content creators and wedding photographers, so the second-hand market is rich in Sony full-frame bodies (A7 III, A7 IV, A7C), Canon EOS R and 5D series, Fujifilm X-T bodies, plus GoPros, drones and gimbals. Gear turns over fast when people leave the island, which is when the good deals appear.
Popular lenses (Sony 24-70 f/2.8, 85 f/1.8, Sigma Art) resell easily; niche lenses do not, so negotiate harder on them.
The checks that matter in the tropics
Humidity is the enemy: shine a torch through every lens looking for fungus threads or haze, check the sensor for spots at f/16 against a white wall, and test every button and dial. Ask for the shutter count (many bodies show it in the menu or via a free web tool) and compare it with the rated life.
Bring your own memory card, take test shots in RAW, and check the battery holds charge. A body that lived in a dry cabinet is worth paying a little more for.
Fair prices and safe deals
Second-hand prices follow the international market, adjusted for Indonesian import duties, which keep new gear expensive and used gear attractive. Our market price page shows the live median for cameras listed on BaliMarket; a very low price on a high-end body is a warning sign.
Meet in a café or a camera shop, test on the spot, ask for the original box and receipt when available, and pay by transfer only once the item is in your hands.
